Team Statement:
We are a team of students from Luther Burbank Middle School in Highland Park, CA. When our coach asked us what we felt needed fixing in our community, we said that it is hard for girls in math and science. We think there should be more girls in math and science careers. At the beginning of the year when we were putting together our proposal for this team, we found some statistics about how many women have degrees and jobs in engineering or physics. The numbers weren't where we wanted them to be. So we wanted to have an event to not only show girls in the area that we are a great school, but also encourage more girls in STEM. We decided the best way to do this would be to get little girls interest earlier in life, by showing them how cool STEM can be. We are still planning our Maker Day, but we know that girls around our neighborhood will have a blast creating things like catapults and programming robots. We are going to show them that we can do anything, and so can they.
Process: We have met occasionally throughout the year to talk about what we want to do at the Maker Day, and have met with key people around our school - including our Vice Principal and the Parent Center Leader. We spent time making signs to post on Instagram and posters to post throughout the school. We had to wait a very long time to get our materials however, so much so that our event got pushed back almost a month...we're still waiting on some materials for the Maker Day to arrive. With 2 weeks to go to our Maker Day we increased our meetings to every day after school, sometimes for 3 hours! We made presentations to show students as they build their catapults, and talked about how we will talk about STEM with a young audience. While initially our jobs were divided evenly, now we really work as a team, with everyone having a say in each project. We've lost 3 or 4 girls throughout the year, so more and more has fallen to the girls left over.
Outcomes - Still to come! Our Maker Day event will take place on April 29th, 2017!
Evidence - Still to come! Our Maker Day event will take place on April 29th, 2017!
